»Die menschliche Sprache ist ein weites Feld. Ich selbst habe mich vorwiegend mit der Semantik, also der Lehre der Bedeutung sprachlicher Ausdrücke beschäftigt, und wie wir Bedeutungen kommunizieren – mit anderen Worten, wie wir uns mit ihnen infizieren. In der Art und Weise, wie das geschieht, unterscheidet sich die menschliche Sprache radikal von tierischen oder pflanzlichen Kommunikationssystemen.«

Prof. Dr. Manfred Krifka

Jahrgang 1956, Studium der Theoretischen Linguistik, Psycholinguistik, Literaturwissenschaft und Philosophie, Logik und Wissenschaftstheorie 1976–1981 an der Universität München gefördert durch die Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes. Anschließend Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an den Universitäten Konstanz und München und Hospitanz als Wissenschaftsredakteur bei der Frankfurter Rundschau 1984. Promotion 1986 in München, 1986 bis 1989 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Seminar für natürlichsprachliche Systeme, Universität Tübingen. 1990 Assistent Professor, 1993 Associate Professor am Department of Linguistics, University of Texas at Austin. 1995 Fellow am Center of Advanced Study, Stanford; 1997 Fellow am Center for Advanced Studies, Jerusalem. 2000 Ruf auf die Professur für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft, Institut für deutsche Sprache und Linguistik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Seit 2001 darüber hinaus Direktor des Zentrums Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS), seit 2017 eine Einrichtung der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft. Mitglied der Academia Europaea seit 2007. Zahlreiche Forschungsprojekte, darunter Sprachen in Ambrym (Vanuatu) gefördert durch die VolkswagenStiftung und ein ERC Advanced Grant Sprechakte in Grammatik und Diskurs.
